This listing is for ONE hand crafted and fired historical spindle for hand spinning wool or flax.
I have hand crafted each clay whorl, and Luke has hand turned each spindle from natural wood. These spindles work together with a distaff, for in hand spinning.
These spindles are not reproductions, but are inspired by the many clay spindle whorls which have been found. I make similar markings in my own creative way, inspired by Iron age, Saxon, Viking, Roman, and early Medieval whorls. Some markings styles may be suited to particular eras, so I have also made plain whorls with no markings if you are unsure about whether the decorative ones would suit your reenactment needs.
The whorls are all slightly different weights, approximately 10g – 15g (plus the weight of the wooden spindle).
The decorative whorls are random designs, and picked at random, there are some examples in the photos to show the slightly different shapes and designs, but each one is unique.
The holes in the whorls are crafted at a slight angle, to fit onto the turned wood spindle. On mine I push it onto the spindle well, so that it doesn’t fall off easily. I also work with my spindles standing or sitting on soft ground, a sheepskin, rug or grass, so that if the whorl isn’t pushed onto the spindle enough then it’s less likely to break if it falls off.
